Tips

How to answer IELTS Listening Map Labelling questions

  1. 1

Before listening, find the entrance, compass direction and fixed landmarks. Check where the numbered locations sit in relation to the paths.

  2. 2

Read the named options and the instructions. Choose a letter for each location; do not type the place name into a letter-choice task.

  3. 3

Follow the speaker’s starting point and direction. Left and right depend on which way the speaker is facing; north and south stay fixed.

  4. 4

Use relationships such as opposite, beyond the crossing and beside the pond to locate a place, rather than choosing on a familiar word alone.

  5. 5

Listen through corrections and rejected plans before deciding. Questions follow the recording, but the answer letters need not be alphabetical.

  6. 6

Try once without pausing, then check your six answers and use the transcript to trace any route you missed. This short drill gives a raw score, not an IELTS band.

IELTS Listening Map Labelling sample question with answer

You will hear a park guide explaining a map to visitors at the main gate. This is an original practice recording about a fictional park.

Open the numbered map and play the recording before reading this worked answer. The map and its A–H place options are on the drill page.

Label the map below. Choose SIX answers from the box and write the correct letter, A–H, next to questions 1–6.

1. Location 1

Answer: C. Visitor centre. From the south gate, facing north makes left the western side. Location 1 is the western building below the crossing, so it is the visitor centre (C).
