1

Library evening collection

From next month, Eastbank Library will test an evening collection service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Members who cannot visit during normal opening hours can reserve books online and collect them from secure lockers beside the main entrance until nine in the evening. Staff will send a collection code when an order is ready, and the books will remain in the locker for two days.

The service is designed for people whose work or caring responsibilities prevent daytime visits. It will initially cover books only; computers, printing and staff assistance will still be available during normal library hours. Members who do not use the internet can place a reservation by telephone.

The trial will last three months. The library will count collections and ask users for feedback before deciding whether to continue it or extend it to more evenings.

Workplace training arrangements

A local delivery company is introducing new handheld scanners next month. Before the change, every driver will attend a practical training session during paid working hours. The same session will run on three different days so that deliveries can continue and drivers can choose a time that fits their shift. Supervisors will arrange cover for each person taking part.

During training, drivers will practise recording deliveries, reporting damaged parcels and using the scanner when the internet connection is weak. They will use sample parcels rather than real customer deliveries, allowing them to ask questions and correct mistakes without delaying customers.

After the new scanners are introduced, a trained colleague will be available on each shift for the first two weeks. Managers will review the questions drivers raise and update the short instruction sheet where further explanation is needed.

Community repair programme

The Northfield Community Centre will hold a repair morning on the first Saturday of each month. Residents can bring small household items, such as lamps or torn clothing, and work alongside volunteers to see whether they can be repaired. The aim is to reduce waste while helping people learn simple repair skills.

Visitors must book a place and describe their item in advance. This helps organisers match each appointment with a volunteer who has suitable skills. Advice is free, but visitors may need to buy replacement parts if a repair requires them. Volunteers will explain the likely cost before any parts are ordered.

Not every item can be repaired safely. If a volunteer considers an item unsafe or beyond their expertise, they will suggest a professional service or an appropriate recycling option instead. The centre therefore asks visitors to expect advice and shared learning rather than a guaranteed repair.

Model answer (39 words)

Eastbank Library is trialling evening book collection from lockers to help members who cannot visit during normal hours. Reservations can be made online or by phone, and usage and feedback will determine whether the three-month service continues or expands.

Key points

  • Main idea: the trial makes book collection accessible outside normal hours.
  • Essential limit: the evening service covers books, not computers or staff assistance. The model summarises access without claiming the whole library stays open.
  • Decision: continuation or expansion depends on usage and feedback, so it is not guaranteed.
  • Two complete sentences are acceptable in PTE Core. Check the 25–50-word target, accuracy and grammar separately.

PTE Core: read up to 200 words, then write 25–50 words in one or more complete sentences. Allow 10 minutes per question; this practice does not enforce a countdown. Pearson’s Core task instructions.
