Adolescent Identity and Algorithmic Feedback

Free to try, no login

Read the passage below and summarize it using one sentence. You have 10 minutes, and your response should be between 5 and 75 words.

During adolescence, rapid neurological maturation makes individuals acutely sensitive to peer evaluation and social status. In modern environments, this developmental vulnerability intersects directly with digital platforms designed to quantify approval through visible engagement counters, like tallies, and continuous notification loops. When young users distribute personal content, immediate peer reactions activate dopaminergic reward pathways in the brain, fostering habitual checking behaviours and an intense reliance on external digital validation.

Nevertheless, the architecture of automated feeds rarely provides an accurate reflection of adolescent peer groups. Recommendation algorithms systematically promote emotionally charged or heavily stylised material to prolong screen exposure, frequently highlighting unattainable standards of physical appearance, material wealth, and social popularity. Consequently, adolescents routinely engage in upward social comparison, contrasting their ordinary daily lives with polished digital highlights. Longitudinal research suggests that this chronic exposure correlates strongly with diminished self-esteem, heightened social anxiety, and distorted body perceptions.

Furthermore, persistent metric evaluation incentivises performative self-curation, wherein teenagers shape their public persona to satisfy algorithmic trends rather than developing autonomous personal values. Although digital spaces offer genuine opportunities for peer connection and creative exploration, the relentless commodification of social approval poses enduring challenges to healthy psychological development.

Tips

How to answer Summarize Written Text

  1. 1

Find the passage's central idea first: what is the whole text about, not one paragraph?

  2. 2

Pick the two or three key supporting points or the main contrast.

  3. 3

Join them in one sentence with linking words (while, because, which, although, so that) and a single full stop at the end.

  4. 4

Paraphrase where you can, but keep technical words; aim for about 30–50 words.

  5. 5

Check before submitting: one sentence, capital letter at the start, full stop at the end, no spelling slips.

Summarize Written Text: frequently asked questions

How many words should a Summarize Written Text answer be?+

In PTE Academic, between 5 and 75 words in one sentence; around 30–50 words is the comfortable target. In PTE Core it is 25–50 words.

Can I use more than one sentence?+

Not in PTE Academic: Form requires a single sentence. Use commas, a semicolon or linking words instead of a second full stop.

Can I copy sentences from the passage?+

You may reuse key words, but stitching copied sentences together usually loses Content and Vocabulary marks. Show you understood the main idea.

How long do I get?+

Ten minutes for each Summarize Written Text item, separate from the other items in Part 1.
