  • •Seven traits, 26 points in all (Score Guide, July 2025): Content 0–6, Development, Structure and Coherence 0–6, General Linguistic Range 0–6, Form 0–2, Grammar 0–2, Vocabulary Range 0–2, Spelling 0–2.
  • •Form: full marks for 200–300 words. Under 120 or over 380 words scores zero for the whole essay.
  • •An irrelevant or unoriginal (memorised) essay gets no credit; a human expert reviews Content, Development and Linguistic Range.

How to answer Write Essay

    Spend two minutes planning: your position, two reasons, an example for each.

    Introduction: paraphrase the prompt and state your position clearly in two or three sentences.

  3. 3

    Two body paragraphs, each with one main reason, an explanation and a concrete example.

  4. 4

    Conclusion: restate your position in new words and sum up the reasons.

  5. 5

    Keep the last three minutes to check spelling, grammar and that you are within 200–300 words.

Write Essay: frequently asked questions

How many words should a PTE essay be?+

Between 200 and 300 words for full Form marks. Fewer than 120 or more than 380 words scores zero for the whole essay.

Are templates allowed?+

A clear structure helps, but Pearson gives no credit for memorised, unoriginal material, and a human expert reviews Content and Linguistic Range. Write your own sentences about the prompt.

Is Write Essay in PTE Core?+

No. PTE Core has Write Email instead. Write Essay is PTE Academic only.

How long do I get?+

Twenty minutes for each essay.
