Marks

How Highlight Correct Summary is scored

  • •Correct or incorrect: the best summary earns one mark; an incorrect or missing selection earns zero. There is no partial credit for a nearly correct summary.
  • •The task contributes to Listening and Reading. You select a paragraph; you do not write or record a summary.
  • •The score here is a practice total for these questions, not a predicted PTE score on the 10–90 scale. No AI evaluation is needed to mark the selected option.

In the test

How many summary paragraphs should I select?

Select one paragraph: the summary that best matches the recording as a whole. Several options may contain true details, but only one preserves the main point and essential supporting relationships without adding or changing claims.

Tips

How to choose the best summary

  1. 1

Listen for the speaker’s main point first. Make brief notes on the supporting reasons, examples and conclusion.

  2. 2

After listening, compare each summary with your notes. Familiar words are not enough: check what each paragraph claims about them.

  3. 3

Reject a summary that reverses cause and effect, turns a possibility into a certainty, or adds a conclusion the speaker never made.

  4. 4

Check the emphasis. An option may repeat accurate details but miss the main point or treat a supporting example as the whole argument.

  5. 5

Select the single paragraph that preserves the main point and its essential relationships. Then check the explanations and transcript to understand why the other options fail.

Highlight Correct Summary: frequently asked questions

What is Highlight Correct Summary in PTE?+

Highlight Correct Summary, or HCS, is a PTE Academic Listening task. After a 30–90-second recording, choose the paragraph that best summarises it. One option is correct.

Is Highlight Correct Summary in PTE Core?+

No. This practice is for PTE Academic. Core has Summarize Spoken Text, which asks you to write your own response instead.

How is HCS different from Summarize Spoken Text?+

In HCS you select an existing summary paragraph and receive a correct-or-incorrect mark. In Academic Summarize Spoken Text you write a 50–70-word summary in 10 minutes. HCS tests Listening and Reading; Summarize Spoken Text tests Listening and Writing.

Do all HCS questions have four options?+

Pearson describes several options with one correct answer, rather than requiring a fixed number. This original practice set uses four options per question.

Can I practise HCS without signing up?+

Yes. Listen, select your answers and check the score, transcript and option explanations without an account. These are BandLadder-original practice materials, not official Pearson questions.

Can I replay the recording in the exam?+

No. The exam plays each recording once. Use any replay or transcript offered during practice for review, after your first attempt.

Do I need an account?+

No. Every set is free to attempt in full without a login. Objective questions receive an instant score and explanations. Before signup, you can receive one free writing evaluation and one free speaking evaluation, shared across IELTS and PTE. Listening tasks also include transcripts.
