Can you correct yourself in IELTS Speaking?

Yes. Correcting a mistake is normal, and the official Speaking descriptors allow 'some hesitation, repetition and/or self-correction' at band 7, as long as it does not affect coherence. It becomes a problem when it is frequent: at band 6 coherence 'may be lost at times' through self-correction, and band 4 describes a speaker who 'often self-corrects'.

Self-correction band by band

From the Fluency and Coherence column of the Speaking band descriptors.

BandWording
9 and 8Fluent with only very occasional repetition or self-correction
7Some hesitation, repetition and/or self-correction may occur, often mid-sentence... However, these will not affect coherence
6Coherence may be lost at times as a result of hesitation, repetition and/or self-correction
5Usually able to keep going, but relies on repetition and self-correction to do so
4Often self-corrects

Why the descriptors care

Fluency is about speech continuity. The Speaking key assessment criteria say flow should ideally not be 'excessively interrupted by false starts, backtracking, functionless repetitions of words and phrases'. A quick fix of a word does not do that; restarting most sentences does.

Grammar is assessed separately on error density and the effect of errors, and band 7 allows that 'a few basic errors persist'. IDP India's advice is to correct yourself 'only if necessary' (IDP India).

A practical rule

Fix errors that change your meaning, such as a wrong word or tense that confuses the listener. Let small slips go and keep talking. Recording practice answers shows how often you restart.

Frequently asked questions

Does self-correction show good grammar awareness?+

The descriptors do not reward it as such. Occasional correction is acceptable; frequent correction lowers Fluency and Coherence.

Will one uncorrected mistake cost me a band?+

No. Band 7 grammar allows a few basic errors, and examiners rate your average performance across the test.

Is it better to stop and restart a sentence?+

Restarts count as backtracking and false starts in the key criteria. Repair briefly and continue.

Does the same apply in Writing?+

In Writing you can edit before time runs out; the descriptors judge only the finished text.
