What IDP says
IDP describes an informal letter as conversational and says it can include contractions and more direct speech, while its table of formal and informal language pairs 'cannot' with 'can't' (IDP). Another IDP guide says that in formal letters you should avoid contractions, and that informal letters can include them (IDP).
| Letter style | Contractions? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Formal (Dear Sir or Madam) | Avoid | IDP |
| Informal (to a friend) | Can include | IDP |
| Semi-formal | IDP gives no separate rule; our samples allow a few and no slang | BandLadder letter samples |
Why it matters for your band
Contractions are a tone choice. The key assessment criteria ask you to consistently use a tone appropriate to the task, and IDP says being too casual in a formal letter or too formal with a friend affects your marks (IDP Australia).

Task 2 is different
General Training Task 2 is an essay, not a letter. ielts.org describes it as a semi-formal/neutral discursive essay (ielts.org); it does not mention contractions. See the style for GT Task 2.
Frequently asked questions
Will one contraction ruin a formal letter?+
No official source says so. IDP's advice is to avoid them in formal letters because tone must stay consistent.
Should an informal letter use contractions?+
It can. IDP's informal model letter uses I'm, can't and it's, and IDP says informal letters can include contractions.
Are contractions fine in a semi-formal letter?+
IDP gives no separate rule for semi-formal letters. Our samples use a few and avoid slang, keeping the tone polite.
Can I use contractions in Task 2?+
ielts.org asks for a semi-formal/neutral essay and does not mention contractions either way.
