Do paragraphs matter in IELTS Writing?

Yes. Paragraphing is assessed under Coherence and Cohesion, a quarter of each task's score. In the Task 2 descriptors, 'Paragraphing may be inadequate or missing' is a bolded, rating-limiting feature at band 5, and band 4 allows for no paragraphing at all. Higher bands need paragraphs that support the overall organisation. There is no required number of paragraphs.

Where paragraphs are marked

The Writing key assessment criteria say Coherence and Cohesion assesses 'the appropriate use of paragraphing for topic organisation and presentation' and 'the logical sequencing of ideas and/or information within and across paragraphs'. The four criteria are weighted equally within a task (ielts.org).

How many paragraphs?

ielts.org does not set a number. IDP India says body paragraphs are needed in both tasks but 'the number of paragraphs can vary depending on the writer' (IDP India). IDP India's Writing tips add that you will really limit your score if you don't use paragraphs or don't use them well (IDP India).

Task 1 has paragraphing lines too: band 8 says it is used sufficiently and appropriately, band 9 that it is skilfully managed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a one-paragraph essay penalised?+

In Task 2, missing or inadequate paragraphing is a rating-limiting feature at band 5 of Coherence and Cohesion.

Do I need exactly four or five paragraphs?+

No. ielts.org sets no number; IDP India says it varies by writer. What counts is logical organisation.

How do I show a new paragraph on paper?+

ielts.org does not specify. Make breaks clear, for example with a blank line, so the examiner can see them.

Does Task 1 need paragraphs?+

Yes. The Task 1 descriptors also assess paragraphing under Coherence and Cohesion.
