Does a short IELTS Speaking test mean a low score?

No. ielts.org puts the Speaking test at 11 to 14 minutes, and IDP says a test that runs shorter or longer than average does not mean you will score lower or higher, because the evaluation criteria do not take into account how long your test lasts. The examiner follows set timings for each part and scores your average performance across all three.

What IDP says

From IDP's Speaking myths article: 'While you might be concerned that your test lasted shorter or longer than the average duration, it doesn't mean that you will score lower or higher because of it. The evaluation criteria do not take into account how long your test lasts' (IDP).

The official timings

From the ielts.org Speaking format and IDP's FAQ.

Other things that do not change your score

IDP says examiners will not give more or fewer marks for smiling or laughing, and that politeness, while it helps the conversation, is not part of the criteria (IDP FAQ, IDP myths). Being interrupted is also normal: the examiner keeps to time. Your band comes from the four criteria, rated on your average across all parts (Speaking band descriptors).

Frequently asked questions

My test ended after 11 minutes. Is that bad?+

No. 11 minutes is within the 11 to 14 minute range ielts.org gives, and IDP says length does not affect the score.

Did the examiner end Part 1 early because I did badly?+

IDP says the examiner has to keep to time and move on; it is not a signal about your score.

Does the examiner's reaction show my score?+

IDP says examiners are trained and monitored to be fair. Their manner is not part of the criteria.

When is my Speaking scored?+

IDP says the examiner who interviews you gives your score as soon as you leave the room.
