Do you need IELTS for Canadian spousal sponsorship?

No. IRCC's sponsorship pages list who can sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or dependent child: age 18 or over, a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian living in Canada, and a signed undertaking. Neither the sponsor nor the person sponsored has a language test. Language proof comes later, if the partner applies for citizenship aged 18 to 54.

What IRCC requires of the sponsor

The eligibility page asks you to be at least 18, a citizen, permanent resident or person registered under the Indian Act, to live in Canada (a citizen abroad must show plans to return), and to commit to support the people you sponsor. In most cases there is no income requirement.

You may not be eligible if you were sponsored as a spouse less than 5 years ago, are still responsible for a previous partner you sponsored, or are on social assistance for a reason other than disability, among other reasons the page lists. No language test appears on the page.

Working while you wait

A spouse or partner living in Canada and being sponsored for permanent residence can apply for an open work permit once they have an acknowledgement of receipt letter for the PR application (IRCC). The open work permit page lists no language test either.

Need a CLB score for Canada?

IRCC accepts IELTS General Training and PTE Core, not IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. Practise the test you will actually sit, free.

When language proof is needed

For citizenship, applicants aged 18 to 54 must show speaking and listening at CLB 4 or higher in English or French (IRCC). See IELTS for Canadian citizenship for which results count.

Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the IRCC spousal sponsorship pages before you book a test or apply. This guide restates the official page; it is not legal or immigration advice.
