HKUST(GZ) postgraduate English scores
From the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School admission requirements, which cover research and taught postgraduate programmes. The MBA+ requirements and the College of Future Technology give the same figures.
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5, every sub-score 5.5, single attempt |
| TOEFL iBT | 80 (tests before 21 Jan 2026) or 4.5 (from 21 Jan 2026) |
| TOEFL paper-based | 550 |
| TOEFL revised paper-delivered | 60 (Reading + Listening + Writing) |
Exemptions and tests not accepted
You do not need a test if English is your first language or your bachelor's degree is from an institution where English is the medium of instruction. For MBA+, a master's or higher from an English-medium institution also counts. TOEFL's test-at-home option is not accepted, and PTE and Duolingo are not listed.

Programme rules and undergraduate entry
The graduate school says some programmes may set additional requirements in the postgraduate programme catalogue. MBA+ offers a free IELTS preparation course to provisionally selected candidates. HKUST(GZ)'s undergraduate admissions site did not show its English requirement when we checked, so this guide covers postgraduate study only.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your HKUST(GZ) programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
