What does 'no band less than 6' mean in IELTS?

It means every one of your four section scores, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, must be at least that band, as well as your overall score meeting the main requirement. So 'IELTS 6.5 overall with no band less than 6.0' needs 6.5 overall and 6.0 or more in each skill. Your Test Report Form shows all five scores.

Overall and section scores

ielts.org says the Test Report Form shows your overall score and your scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band (ielts.org). Because it is an average, a high overall can hide a low section, which is why many requirements add a per-section minimum.

Variations you will see

Wording differs: 'no band below', 'minimum 6.0 in each component', 'each skill at least 6.0' and 'with 6.5 in Writing' are all common. Some set a different minimum for one skill. Read the exact wording on the course or visa page, then compare each line of your result.

If one skill falls short, IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit a single section where it is offered, but check that your organisation accepts it. Every university, employer and visa authority sets its own minimum, often with a minimum in each skill as well as overall. Check the exact requirement before you book.
