Checklist
From ielts.org's IELTS Online page. Before the day you receive an email about the software to download; ielts.org's test-day advice also asks for a phone or tablet camera for the room scan, which you then switch off and put away (ielts.org).
| You need | Detail |
|---|---|
| Age | 18 or over |
| Computer | Laptop or desktop, one screen only |
| Audio | Microphone; headphones not allowed |
| Space | Desk in a quiet, private, well-lit space; it need not be your home |
| Internet | Reliable connection; LAN or wifi |
| Software | Inspera Exam Portal, with system checks done at least one day before |
| Room scan | Phone or tablet camera, then switched off |
During the test
Human and AI proctors monitor you; you only see a proctor if something seems wrong or you raise your hand. You cannot open other programs or browsers, and you cannot use pen and paper, but you can make notes on screen. There is one 5-minute bathroom break, taken between sections. Video and audio of you and your screen are recorded: Listening, Reading and Writing recordings are kept for 60 days and the Speaking recording for 3 months (ielts.org).

If something goes wrong
If your internet drops briefly, you get extra time equal to the time lost. If you lose it for a long time and need to retake, the test partner (British Council or IDP) organises it. Results come 6 to 8 days after the test, and institutions you chose at booking receive your eTRF directly (ielts.org).
