What the 60 minutes covers
ielts.org lists Reading as "60 minutes (including transfer time)" (ielts.org). On paper, any time spent copying answers to the answer sheet came out of the hour. On computer there is nothing to copy: IDP says the texts appear on the left of the screen, the questions on the right, and your answers are saved automatically when time runs out (IDP).
| Reading on paper | Reading on computer | |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 60 minutes | 60 minutes |
| Separate transfer time | No, included in the 60 | Not needed |
| Time warnings | Wall clock in the room | On-screen clock flashes at 10 and 5 minutes left |
Pacing the three sections
An IDP expert suggests spending no more than 20 minutes on each of the three parts, because the passages get more challenging as you go and the last one needs enough time (IDP Community). ielts.org reminds test takers that watches are not allowed in the room, but every test room has a wall clock (ielts.org).
If you are running out of time, IDP says you will not lose a mark for a wrong answer, so make an educated guess rather than leave a box empty (IDP).

Copying answers accurately
IDP's advice on numbers in Reading is to transfer them carefully, especially when there are several zeros, and to copy currency symbols and commas exactly as they appear in the text (IDP). On computer, check what you typed against the passage before you move on.
