Is IELTS 5.5 a good score?

IELTS 5.5 is a lower-intermediate score. It sits between band 5 ('Modest') and band 6 ('Competent'), and it is the lowest band ielts.org's chart places at CEFR B2. In ielts.org's guidance for institutions, 5.5 is 'probably acceptable' only for linguistically less demanding training courses; academic courses and demanding training courses need more English study.

What ielts.org says 5.5 is enough for

This is the 5.5 row of the table ielts.org gives universities and colleges for setting entry scores (ielts.org). ielts.org adds that English ability is not proof of overall academic capability.

In practice, some foundation, pathway and vocational courses and some visas accept 5.5, often with a minimum per skill. Every university, employer and visa authority sets its own minimum, often with a minimum in each skill as well as overall. Check the exact requirement before you book.
