Is there a maximum word count in IELTS Writing?

No. ielts.org says you will not be penalised for writing more than 150 words in Task 1 or 250 in Task 2. It warns instead that a long Task 1 takes time from Task 2, which counts twice as much, and that a very long essay leaves less time to check and may drift from the question. IDP adds that writing much more does not earn extra marks.

The official position

The ielts.org Academic Writing page says: 'While you will not be penalised for writing more than 150 words, you should remember that a longer Task 1 answer may mean that you have less time to spend on Task 2, which contributes twice as much to your Writing band score.' For Task 2 it says a very long answer may leave no time for checking and correcting, 'and some ideas may not be directly relevant to the question'.

IDP Vietnam's Writing FAQ answers the same question: if you write much more, 'this does not mean you will gain marks' (IDP). IDP India also confirms there is no maximum word count for either task (IDP India).

Minimums, time and a rough guide

The table combines the ielts.org minimums and suggested times with IDP's rough guide to length. IDP stresses there is no exact number: it depends on how fast you write and whether you still have time to check.

Why longer answers rarely score higher

Examiners mark the quality of what you write against four criteria, not its length (ielts.org). Extra paragraphs that wander from the prompt can count against Task Response, which rewards relevant, well-supported ideas. Time spent on a long Task 1 is time taken from Task 2, which is worth double.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose marks for writing 400 words in Task 2?+

Not for the length itself. ielts.org says you are not penalised for writing more than 250 words, but a very long essay may leave no time to check and may include ideas that are not relevant.

How long should my Task 1 be?+

At least 150 words. IDP suggests about 180 as a rough guide if you still have time to check your work.

Does writing more show a wider vocabulary?+

Not by itself. Lexical Resource looks at range, accuracy and appropriacy, which a shorter, precise answer can show.

Is there a page limit on the paper answer sheet?+

ielts.org does not set one on its format pages. It only sets the minimum word counts.
