Other tests and waivers

For undergraduates, Duolingo also needs three sub-scores at 100 or above and a Production sub-score above 95. GTEC CBT 1210, SAT EBRW 500 and Cambridge CAE 176 are also listed. An English GCSE or O level, an American associate degree, two years of full-time college study in an English-speaking country, or graduating from a high school in a native English-speaking country after four years there can replace a test.

For graduate applicants, a degree from an accredited institution where English is the official language of instruction can exempt you. The page says scores on each subtest must be satisfactory. PTE is not mentioned for graduate entry.

If your English is not there yet

Undergraduate applicants who meet the academic requirements but not the English level can apply to the International Year Program at the JMU International Study Center. Graduate applicants who believe they have another way to demonstrate proficiency can email tgs@jmu.edu after applying; programmes consider exceptions case by case.

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement JMU sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture, see IELTS for the USA.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your JMU programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where James Madison University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
