What KAUST does not accept, and waivers

KAUST does not accept medium of instruction (MOI) certificates, the Duolingo English Test (except for visiting students), TOEFL MyBest superscores or IELTS One Skill Retake results. Scores expire two years after the test date, and tests run by an institution for its own admissions do not count. The TOEFL code is 4107.

You are exempt if you earned a degree through in-person study at an accredited institution in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, or a degree at KAUST's Thuwal campus. Distance-learning degrees and degrees from branch campuses or joint programmes outside those countries do not qualify, so a degree from a UK university's campus in Dubai or Malaysia would not count.

Applying before you have a score

You may apply without an English score, but if admitted you must provide results meeting the minimum before enrolment. KAUST strongly recommends including valid scores because admission is competitive. Conditional admits must complete the Academic English Language Communication (AELC) course in their first semester.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your KAUST programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
