Exemptions and certificate rules
Exceptions can be made if your preparatory education was in a country where English is the only official educational language. A diploma from a European institution on NHL Stenden's list with English in the final exams, GCSE O and A/AS levels with sufficient scores, the European Baccalaureate, the IB Diploma or an IB Career-related Programme taught fully in English also exempt you.
Only certificates from public test programmes count, not institutional ones, and IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, LanguageCert and PTE results more than two years old at the start of your studies are refused. Duolingo is not on the list.

English course and master's admission
If you fall short, NHL Stenden offers an English language course you can take before your bachelor's or master's starts. Master's applicants apply through Studielink with a relevant bachelor's at NLQF 6 / EQF 6 level, a motivation letter and a CV, and an interview may form part of the procedure. Non-EU bachelor's students must submit their graduation statement before the visa deadline of 1 July for September or 1 December for February.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NHL Stenden programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
