Visa English requirements

Does the New Zealand Guardian Visitor Visa need an English test?

No. Immigration New Zealand's Guardian Visitor Visa asks you to be the parent or legal guardian of a child with a current student visa, to have NZD 1,000 a month to live on (or NZD 400 if accommodation is paid), to be in good health and character and to plan to leave. It lists no English test; only non-English documents need certified translations.

Who can apply

The Guardian Visitor Visa page says the child must have a current student visa and be 17 or younger, or enrolled in school years 1 to 13. INZ issues the visa to only 1 parent or legal guardian at a time, even with more than 1 child studying. Grandparents and other relatives do not count as legal guardians unless legally recognised.

What the visa allows

You live with and care for your child, explore New Zealand as a visitor, and may work or study part-time depending on your visa conditions. You must not plan to work unless you work remotely for an overseas business or have conditions allowing part-time work. A partner or other children need their own visas.

Your child's English

The child's school must declare, in the offer of place, that it is satisfied the student has the English language ability to pass the course (INZ). English test results are not mandatory for the student visa, though INZ says they can help show genuine intention. Immigration rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current rule on the INZ Guardian Visitor Visa page before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice.
