Waivers and other options

You meet the requirement if you are from a listed English-speaking country and were taught in English, or if you attended secondary school in a listed English-speaking country for at least four years. A full IB diploma in English or a 5 in the IB English exam, and O or A Level exams, also earn a waiver; other exams such as the SSC or HSC are reviewed case by case.

OWU also treats an InitialView interview as a way to show English. You can self-report scores when applying, but official scores are required at enrolment; for IELTS you can email the Test Report Form number.

English assessment on arrival

The support page says students with IELTS below 7.0 (or TOEFL iBT below 85, Duolingo below 135) may be required to take an English assessment covering listening, grammar, vocabulary, reading, a 45-minute writing sample and a short interview. Results can place students in one or two English for Academic Purposes courses in their first semester.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your OWU programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Ohio Wesleyan University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
