Which should you take?

Neither IRCC nor either test maker says one test is easier. Both run on a computer and both record your speaking into a microphone, with no live examiner. Weigh these points, then take a scored practice test in each format.

Location. PTE Core runs at Pearson's 500+ centres worldwide. CELPIP runs in Canada and in fewer cities abroad: Paragon listed 48 Indian centres in about 40 cities on 10 October 2026, and in Pakistan only Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar. Check the CELPIP test date finder for your city first.

Scoring. PTE Core is scored by Pearson's AI engine; CELPIP speaking is rated by 3 to 5 raters. If you speak clearly and steadily, the computer-scored format may suit you. If your answers are well organised but your delivery hesitates, try a CELPIP-style task before deciding.

Your weakest skill. CELPIP needs the same number in every skill for a given CLB. PTE Core thresholds are uneven: CLB 9 is listening 82, reading 78, speaking 84, writing 88. If writing is your weak skill, the PTE Core route to CLB 9 is steeper there.

Speed and cost. PTE Core results usually arrive in 2 business days; CELPIP in 2 to 4. In Canada CELPIP was CAD 299 and PTE Core CAD 360. In India CELPIP was INR 15,500 and PTE Core INR 18,900, on the dates above.

Other uses. PTE Core is a Canada test and is not accepted for Australian or New Zealand visas. If you may also need a result for Australia, compare IELTS vs CELPIP vs PTE Core.
