IELTS General or CELPIP for Canada: which should you take?

CELPIP is scaled to the CLB, so a CELPIP 9 is CLB 9 in that skill. IELTS bands map unevenly: CLB 9 needs IELTS listening 8.0 but only 7.0 in reading, writing and speaking, and CLB 8 needs listening 7.5 with 6.5 elsewhere. If listening is your strongest IELTS skill this costs you little; if it is your weakest, the IELTS route to CLB 9 is steeper in that one skill.

CLB 9 matters because it is where the points jump. Under the Comprehensive Ranking System a single applicant earns 17 points per ability at CLB 7 and 31 at CLB 9, so moving all four abilities from CLB 7 to CLB 9 adds 56 points before skill-transferability points. CELPIP Speaking has eight tasks in 15 minutes: giving advice, a personal experience, describing a scene, making predictions, comparing and persuading, a difficult situation, expressing opinions and an unusual situation. Each performance is rated by three to five raters working independently (CELPIP). Writing is two tasks in 53 minutes: an email and a response to survey questions (CELPIP).

IELTS General Training Speaking is an 11 to 14 minute conversation with an examiner, and Writing is a letter (Task 1) and an essay (Task 2) in 60 minutes. CELPIP's content is everyday Canadian English; IELTS General uses everyday and workplace texts. Neither test maker says its test is easier, so decide on availability and a scored practice test, not reputation.

Choose CELPIP if you are in Canada or near an Indian CELPIP centre (Paragon listed 48 centres in about 40 Indian cities on 10 October 2026, all at INR 15,500), you only need English for Canadian immigration or citizenship, and you want results in 2 to 4 business days without a separate speaking day (CELPIP).

Choose IELTS General if CELPIP is not offered near you (in Pakistan it ran only in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar), if you may also need the result for Australia or New Zealand, or if you would rather speak to a person than to a microphone. Whatever you pick, results must be under two years old both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you apply for PR, and IRCC uses each skill separately, so your weakest skill sets your CLB.
