Easiest English test for Canada PR: IELTS General vs CELPIP vs PTE Core

CLB 7 in every skill is the Federal Skilled Worker minimum. IRCC converts each skill separately, so your weakest skill sets your level.

CLB 9 in every skill earns more points under the Comprehensive Ranking System. Look at where each test's bar sits: PTE Core writing needs 88 out of 90 for CLB 9, and IELTS listening needs 8.0. Check your own score on the IELTS to CLB calculator or the full CLB chart.

How you are scored. IELTS General Training speaking is an 11 to 14 minute test with an examiner (ielts.org). CELPIP speaking is 8 recorded tasks, each rated by 3 to 5 raters (celpip.ca, read 10 October 2026). PTE Core speaking and writing are scored by Pearson's AI engine (Pearson). If you talk more freely to a person, IELTS may suit you; if a microphone does not bother you, CELPIP or PTE Core may.

Your weakest skill. CELPIP needs the same number in every skill for a given CLB. IELTS and PTE Core thresholds are uneven across skills, so compare your weak skill against the tables above, not your average.

Where you can sit it. IELTS and PTE Core run at test centres in many countries. CELPIP runs mainly in Canada and fewer cities abroad: the CELPIP test date finder listed 41 Indian cities on 14 October 2026 (celpip.ca; our list is in CELPIP test centres in India). Check dates in your city first.

Results and other plans. PTE Core results usually come in 2 business days and CELPIP results in 2 to 4 (read 25 and 10 October 2026). PTE Core and CELPIP are built for Canada; if you might also apply to Australia or the UK, IELTS General Training has wider use. Take a scored practice test in two formats before you book.

Checked on 25 October 2026 against: IRCC, Language test results for Express Entry; IRCC, CRS criteria; IELTS, General Training test format; Pearson, PTE Core.
