PTE mock test format and timing
A full PTE Academic mock follows the exam's three parts in order. Pearson describes the test as about two hours; its Score Guide says it can run to a maximum of 2 hours 15 minutes, because each version is balanced differently. The PTE Core mock follows Core's own task list instead.
| Part | Time (Pearson) | Question types |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Speaking and Writing | 76–84 minutes | 9, including Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay |
| 2. Reading | 23–30 minutes | 5, including Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks and Reorder Paragraphs |
| 3. Listening | 31–39 minutes | 8, including Summarize Spoken Text, Highlight Incorrect Words and Write from Dictation |
How the mock test is scored
- Reading and listening answers are marked instantly, with partial credit where the real task gives it.
- Speaking and writing answers are scored by BandLadder AI on the traits Pearson publishes: content, oral fluency and pronunciation for speaking; content, form, grammar, vocabulary and spelling for writing.
- Questions that test two skills, such as Repeat Sentence or Write from Dictation, count towards both, as in the real test.
- The overall score is worked out from all your marks on the 10–90 scale. Like Pearson's, it is not an average of the four skill scores.
Mock score vs real PTE score
A mock score is a practice estimate, not an official result, and no practice platform can promise your test-day score. Pearson's own Scored Practice Tests use past test content and its official scoring algorithms; they are sold separately on pearsonpte.com.
Treat each skill score as a range of a few points rather than a fixed number. The biggest gaps between a mock and the real test usually come from the recording, not your English: a noisy room, a microphone too close to your mouth, or long pauses that cut a speaking answer short. Fix those at home and the mock becomes a fairer guide.
How to take a PTE mock test at home
- Use a laptop or desktop with a keyboard for a full mock; a phone is fine for single questions.
- Wear a headset with a microphone, allow microphone access in your browser, and record a test answer first.
- Choose a quiet room and sit the whole mock in one go, at the time of day your real test is booked.
- Do not pause or replay: the real test gives you one chance at each recording.
- Afterwards, open the score report, pick the weakest skill and drill that question type before your next mock.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PTE mock test really free?
Yes. A free account gets 1 full mock plus 5 speaking and 2 writing AI evaluations a day, no card across every PTE task type. The rest of the 40+ full-length PTE Academic and Core mocks come with a plan, from 7 days, priced in your local currency.
Can I practise PTE questions without signing up?
Yes. Choose a free question type to try prompts and review answers or model responses. Objective answers are checked without signup. You can receive one writing and one speaking AI evaluation before signup, shared across public IELTS and PTE practice. Create a free account to continue with the account allowances or take a full mock. Drill marks and AI feedback are practice estimates, not an official Pearson score.
Is the PTE mock test accurate?
It is a practice estimate. Scoring follows Pearson's published traits and the 10–90 scale, but it is not an official score and cannot guarantee a test-day result. Use it to find your weakest skill and track progress between mocks.
Is the official Pearson PTE mock test free?
No. Pearson's official Scored Practice Tests are paid products on pearsonpte.com. Pearson also lists some free preparation resources, such as test format guides.
How long is a full PTE mock test?
About 2 hours, like the real PTE Academic: Speaking and Writing 76–84 minutes, Reading 23–30 minutes and Listening 31–39 minutes, per Pearson. If you only have half an hour, sit a single timed section instead.
Does the mock test cover both PTE Academic and PTE Core?
Yes. You can sit a PTE Academic or a PTE Core mock, each with that exam's own tasks. PTE Core mocks also show the CLB level for each skill.
What does the mock test score show?
An overall score on the 10–90 scale with Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening scores, plus the traits behind each speaking and writing answer, such as content, fluency and pronunciation, so you can see what to fix. Our guide to Pearson's scoring criteria explains each trait.
How soon do I get my PTE mock test results?
Reading and listening are marked as soon as you finish; speaking and writing are AI-scored in minutes. For the real exam, Pearson says results usually arrive within two days and can take up to five working days.
How many PTE mock tests should I take before the exam?
There is no official number. A useful pattern is one mock early on to find your weakest skill, focused practice on that skill, then one or two full mocks in the last fortnight under real timing.
