How accurate are PTE mock tests?

No PTE mock test can promise your real score. Pearson's Scored Practice Test is the only practice test using the official PTE Academic scoring engine and criteria, and even Pearson calls its result an indication: you may score the same, lower or higher. Other mocks, including ours, estimate. Read any mock score as a range, and watch the trend over several mocks.

The only mock scored by Pearson's engine

Pearson describes its Scored Practice Test as "the only practice test to use the official PTE Academic scoring engine and criteria". It uses real past questions in the same two-hour format and timing, and it is scored by the same AI engine as the live test. A single test costs US$35.99, charged in US dollars at your bank's exchange rate. There are three versions for PTE Academic, and buying the same version again gives you the same questions.

Even so, Pearson's help centre says the result is only an indicator: you sit it at home in more relaxed conditions, so you "may score the same, lower or higher" in the real test. There is no rescore or appeal for a practice test. The practice Score Report gives an overall score and the four skill scores, but no skills profile. More detail: PTE Scored Practice Test.

Why third-party mock scores differ from the real test

Objective items are easy to copy: Pearson scores multiple-choice answers right or wrong (Pearson), so a well-built mock should mark most Reading and Listening items the way the real test does. The gaps open on the open-ended tasks.

Speaking. After content, spoken answers are scored on pronunciation and oral fluency, and the Score Guide says those two traits are AI-scored only. Pearson's engine was trained on human ratings of responses to every speaking and writing question; other providers do not have those ratings, so fluency and pronunciation are where its estimate and Pearson's disagree most. Your equipment matters too: Pearson warns that a Bluetooth headset or laptop microphone can return a speaking score of 10 on its own practice test.

Memorised answers. In the live test, content in seven task types (Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group Discussion, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay and Summarize Spoken Text) also gets a human expert review. Write Essay is also reviewed for development, structure and coherence, and for general linguistic range. Responses built on significant pre-prepared or memorised material are classed as irrelevant and score zero for content (Score Guide). A mock that does not catch templates can therefore score you higher than the real test will.

Conditions. A test centre, a strict clock and nerves are hard to copy at home. The question set matters as well: one mock's essay topic or lecture may simply suit you better than another's.

"The mock is harder": what that claim means

Pearson publishes no figures comparing any provider's mock with the real test, so "harder" and "easier" claims are opinions, not measurements. In practice they usually mean one of three things: the mock marks speaking or writing more strictly than Pearson does, its questions are longer or denser than typical live items, or it was sat in worse conditions (a laptop microphone, background noise, no break in routine).

A mock that scores you low feels safe, and one that scores you high feels encouraging, but neither is useful unless you know how it relates to Pearson's own scoring. That is why the comparison below is worth doing once.

How to use a mock score

Treat one mock as a range, not a point. Your score moves from test to test with the questions you get, how you slept and your equipment, so a single result a few points either side of your target does not mean much on its own.

Watch the trend. Take full mocks from the same provider under the same conditions (wired headset, quiet room, no pauses) and track each skill over three or more tests. A steady rise is a better guide than any single number.

Calibrate once with Pearson. When your mock scores are near your target, take one official Scored Practice Test and, within a few days, one full mock from the provider you use most. Note the gap in each skill. If that provider scores your speaking well above Pearson's engine, keep that gap in mind for every later mock from them.

Read the parts, not just the total. For Australian visas, Home Affairs sets a minimum in each skill, so a strong overall score can hide one skill below the line. Check the gap for each skill with our PTE points calculator for Australian PR.

Which PTE mock test is best?

For accuracy, Pearson's Scored Practice Test, because it is the only one scored by Pearson's own engine. It costs more than most mocks, with only three versions for PTE Academic, so it works best as a checkpoint before you book. For volume, use mocks that follow the real order and timing, cover all 22 question types, report 10–90 scores for all four skills, and show the trait scores behind each speaking and writing answer. Pearson's free Smart Prep also has nine Guided Practice Tests for format practice (Pearson FAQ, preparation).

Our own estimates come from BandLadder AI. It scores each answer against Pearson's published criteria, but it is not Pearson's engine, and it can differ from your real result, most on speaking fluency and pronunciation and on open writing. You can sit a full, timed, scored PTE mock test free and compare it with a Scored Practice Test using the method above.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PTE Scored Practice Test score the same as the real score?+

Not necessarily. It uses Pearson's official scoring engine, but Pearson says it is only an indication: you take it at home in more relaxed conditions, and you may score the same, lower or higher in the real test.

How accurate are free PTE mock tests?+

They are estimates. Reading and Listening items marked right or wrong are easy to copy, but speaking fluency, pronunciation and open writing are scored by each provider's own model, not Pearson's, so results can differ from the real test.

Why did I score lower in the real PTE than in my mock?+

Common reasons are memorised or template answers that the real test's human content review rejects, test-day nerves and timing, and a mock that marks speaking more generously than Pearson's engine.

Why is my mock speaking score so low?+

Check your equipment first. Pearson warns that a Bluetooth headset or laptop microphone can return a speaking score of 10 on its Scored Practice Test. Use a wired headset with a microphone.

How many mock tests should I take before the PTE exam?+

Pearson sets no number. Enough to see a stable trend in each skill (three or more full mocks under test conditions), plus one official Scored Practice Test as a final check.
