The table below shows the PTE Academic score range that concords to each IELTS band, for the overall score and for each skill. PTE is used as the reference scale because it is more granular.

IELTS Partners' PTE Academic score comparison
The IELTS Partners publish a separate comparison. At IELTS overall 7.0, their table shows PTE Academic 66.3, while Pearson shows 63–70. For IELTS Writing 7.0, the respective figures are 82.3 and 69–76; for Speaking 7.0, they are 65.3 and 76–82. These are research comparisons, not entry requirements, and the two tables should not be combined into one scale.

Is your PTE score enough for an Australian visa?
Since 7 August 2025, Home Affairs sets PTE Academic minimums per skill, and writing and speaking need more than listening and reading. PTE 65 in every skill is now Competent English, and 79 in every skill is Proficient, not Superior. Enter your four skill scores:

What PTE score is equivalent to IELTS 7.0?
Pearson's July 2025 concordance aligns IELTS overall 7.0 with PTE Academic overall 63–70. PTE 65 therefore falls within that range. This is a statistical comparison, not a guaranteed IELTS result or an admission requirement.
What PTE score equals IELTS 6.5?
Pearson's July 2025 concordance aligns IELTS overall 6.5 with PTE Academic overall 55–62, which includes PTE 58. Institutions and visa authorities set their own requirements.
Why do PTE to IELTS tables disagree?
Pearson and the IELTS Partners publish separate research comparisons. For IELTS overall 7.0, Pearson shows PTE Academic 63–70, while the IELTS Partners show 66.3. For IELTS Writing 7.0, the figures are 69–76 and 82.3 respectively. These comparisons should remain separate; neither sets the requirements of a university or visa program.
What PTE score does IELTS say equals IELTS 7.0?
The IELTS Partners' comparison lists PTE Academic 66.3 overall alongside IELTS 7.0. Its skill comparisons at IELTS 7.0 are Listening 66.2, Reading 67.8, Speaking 65.3 and Writing 82.3. These are the published research figures, not minimum scores required for admission.
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Neither is easier for everyone. PTE is taken on a computer and scored by machine with human review of some tasks, while IELTS Speaking is a live interview with an examiner. The tables above only show which scores are comparable; which test suits you depends on the format and on what your university or visa accepts.
