PTE enabling skills explained (2026)

PTE enabling skills are no longer reported. Pearson says the Score Report showed an Enabling Skills section before November 2021, and that it was replaced by a personalised Skills Profile. Today the report gives an overall score and four communicative skill scores, each from 10 to 90. Traits such as grammar, pronunciation and oral fluency still count, but only inside individual question types.

What changed in November 2021

Pearson's article on the new Score Report says that before November 2021 the report also showed an Enabling Skills section, and that this was replaced by a new personalised Skills Profile (Pearson). The article is dated 16 December 2021.

So if a coaching book, video or old score report shows separate enabling-skill scores, it describes the pre-November 2021 format. You will not see those scores on a current PTE Academic Score Report.

What the Score Report shows now

Pearson's scoring page says you receive an overall score on the 10–90 scale, plus individual scores for the communicative skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing (Pearson). Our PTE score chart shows how those 10–90 scores line up with CEFR levels and IELTS bands.

The Skills Profile is separate. Pearson says it uses your test performance to give specific feedback, is visible only to you and is not shared with the institutions you apply to (Pearson).

Where grammar, fluency and pronunciation still count

The old enabling-skill names did not disappear from scoring. The PTE Academic Score Guide still scores traits such as Pronunciation, Oral Fluency, Grammar, Vocabulary and Spelling inside specific question types, and those item scores feed your communicative skill scores. They are just not reported as separate numbers.

See the PTE scoring criteria overview for every trait and the question types that use it, and how PTE Academic is scored for how item scores build the overall score.
