University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for TU Berlin?

TU Berlin's student office lists two English levels for master's programmes: B2+ needs IELTS Academic 6.5, PTE Academic 65 or TOEFL iBT 87, and C1 needs IELTS 7.0, PTE 76 or TOEFL 95. TU Berlin's B2+ and C1 levels

Programme examples with their own lists

Faculty IV publishes a separate certificate list for all its master's programmes except Computational Neuroscience. Its application FAQ says IELTS 6.5 is required even where a lower band is labelled B2 on the certificate. The FAQ says there are currently no validity limits for English certificates.

The Urban Management master's asks IELTS Academic 6. For TOEFL iBT it lists 79 for tests taken before January 2026 and 4.5 for tests taken after.

English-taught degrees and exemptions

Faculty IV accepts a university degree as proof only from countries it counts as native English, such as the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and the Philippines. A medium-of-instruction letter from elsewhere is not listed as proof. Urban Management exempts applicants from native English-speaking countries or who studied in one. It says applicants from countries where English is only an official or teaching language still need a test.

Germany's student visa sets no IELTS band of its own: TU Berlin sets the English requirement for admission, and that is the score to plan around. Our IELTS for Germany guide covers the visa side and test fees.

English requirements in Germany are written into each programme's admission or examination regulations and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your TU Berlin programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
