IELTS Writing checker: an AI band score for your Task 2 essay
Paste a Task 2 question and your essay. It is marked by the same AI examiner and shown on the same result page as essays written on the platform: a band for each of the four criteria, every mistake marked in your essay, what you did well, what to fix first and the start of your essay rewritten at Band 9. One free check a day.
What the checker looks at
IELTS marks Writing Task 2 on four criteria with equal weight: Task Response (do you answer every part of the question with a clear position), Coherence and Cohesion (paragraphing and linking), Lexical Resource (range and accuracy of vocabulary) and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing band, and it needs at least 250 words (IELTS Writing format).
The checker reads your essay against those criteria and returns a band and a written comment for each, so you can see whether ideas, organisation, vocabulary or grammar is the weakest part. Every mistake is marked where it is in your essay. A free account shows how to fix each one, your whole essay rewritten at Band 9 and a model answer, and keeps your results so you can see your band move.
Turn one check into a better essay
Fix the lowest criterion first. If Task Response is low, check that your opinion is stated in the introduction and repeated in the conclusion, and that each body paragraph answers the question. Then rewrite one paragraph and compare it with a model: our Task 2 essays with Band 8 answers cover the common question types.

Questions
Is this IELTS writing checker free?
Yes. You get one free essay check a day without an account. A free BandLadder account adds 2 AI-scored writing answers a day, with Task 1 and Task 2 practice questions.
How is my essay scored?
On the four criteria IELTS examiners use for Task 2: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each gets a band, and the overall writing estimate comes from them.
Is the band the same as a real IELTS score?
No. It is an estimate to help you practise, not an official result. Use it to see which criterion is holding your essay back, then rewrite and check again.
Does it work for General Training essays?
Yes for Task 2. General Training and Academic Task 2 are both essays of at least 250 words answering a question, and they are marked on the same four criteria. Task 1 letters and reports are practised inside the platform.
How long should my essay be?
At least 250 words. IELTS says Task 2 needs 250 words and suggests about 40 minutes. The checker accepts 150 to 500 words so you can test drafts, but short essays lose marks for Task Response.
