How do OET scores convert to IELTS?

OET's own benchmarking table puts a score of 350–390 (grade B) level with IELTS 7.0, 400–440 with 7.5 and 450–500 (grade A) with 8.0–9.0. A C+ of 300–340 matches IELTS 6.5. The comparison works sub-test by sub-test, because OET reports listening, reading, writing and speaking separately, each on a 0–500 scale.

From the IELTS benchmarking table on OET's results and scoring page. Grades B and C each cover two IELTS bands, so the score matters more than the letter.

How OET scores work

OET's Statement of Results gives a score for each of the four sub-tests on a 0–500 scale in steps of ten, each mapped to a grade from A to E. Reading and listening each have 42 questions, and OET says test takers awarded grade B (350) typically score at least 30 marks. Writing and speaking are marked against criteria and converted to the same scale.

So convert each sub-test on its own. A result of 360 in listening, reading and speaking with 310 in writing reads as IELTS 7.0, 7.0, 7.0 and 6.5.

What regulators ask for

Regulators set OET and IELTS minimums separately. The NMC, which registers nurses and midwives in the UK, asks for IELTS Academic 7 in listening, reading and speaking with 6.5 in writing, or OET grade B (350 or above) in listening, reading and speaking with C+ (300 or above) in writing. That is the same line OET's own table draws. The NMC lets you combine two sittings of the same test, but never an IELTS with an OET.

Other regulators set different lines. Our OET vs IELTS for nurses guide compares the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the USA. OET says how long a result stays valid is decided by each recognising authority.
