General ID rules
With few exceptions, each ID document must meet all of these requirements, per ETS's ID requirements page. The exact list for your test location and citizenship is under the country selector on the same page.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original | Photocopies are not accepted |
| Physical | No digital ID on a phone or other device, except some digital IDs in the Republic of Korea |
| Government-issued | National, state or province ID issued and recognised by your country of citizenship or residence |
| Valid | Expired documents are not accepted |
| Name and date of birth | Exactly as registered, excluding accents |
| Photo and signature | Recent, recognisable photo; signature name must match the ID |
Registering your name
Register with your entire first and last name exactly as printed on your ID, without accents; no nicknames or initials as your first name. A two-part surname is entered in full, so Fernandez de Córdova becomes Fernandez de Cordova. A middle initial is optional (ETS).
If the names do not match, you will not be allowed to test and the fee is not refunded. Contact TOEFL Services before registering if you are worried about a discrepancy (ETS).

Documents that never count, and supplemental ID
ETS never accepts these as primary or supplemental ID: international driving licences, draft classification cards, international student IDs, bank cards, notary letters, birth certificates, Social Security cards, employee IDs, temporary IDs and diplomatic or embassy IDs. If your ID is not in English-language letters and the administrator cannot read it, you may be turned away without a refund (ETS).
If the proctor questions your ID, or it lacks your full name, photo or signature, you may need a supplemental ID such as another government ID or a student ID. Supplemental ID cannot fix a surname mismatch (ETS). Candidates aged 15 or under should come with a parent or authorised adult aged 18 or over, and both must show acceptable ID.
For the Home Edition, you need valid government-issued ID, and ETS asks you to verify it with the IDVaaS app at least 48 hours before the test (ETS Home Edition FAQ). Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page for your country before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from the test owner.
