Other tests and exemptions

Toi Ohomai's English help page says students usually provide IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic, and that scores vary by qualification. The regulations say other approved tests follow the NZQA list and exemptions follow NZQA rules. The regulations also say original IELTS records are required.

You may not need a test if you studied at primary and secondary level in English, completed tertiary study in English, hold a CELTA, or hold a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL). If none of these applies, you must sit an NZQA-approved English test. Early childhood education programmes have separate, stricter English rules.

English courses and checks after you start

Toi Ohomai offers Level 3 and Level 4 English courses, including academic English, for students who need to raise their level first. The regulations say Toi Ohomai may test your English at any time during enrolment and use the result to decide on extra support.

Requirements vary by programme and change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your Toi Ohomai programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
