Alternatives and exemptions

For undergraduate entry, UTP also accepts an official English as the Medium of Instruction letter from your previous institution instead of a test.

For postgraduate entry, the English requirement is waived if you hold a bachelor's, master's or other relevant degree from a Malaysian recognised institution with all courses taught in English, are a native of an English-speaking country, or graduated from an institution in an English-speaking country.

Academic entry and how to check

Undergraduate academic entry is separate from English: engineering programmes, for example, ask for A-Level Grade C or 60% in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, a foundation CGPA of 3.00 or IB 24 points. International applicants apply with their final examination semester results.

Neither page mentions PTE or MUET, so ask UTP before relying on another test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UTP programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
