What happens if you go off topic in IELTS Writing?

You are penalised. ielts.org says you will be penalised if what you write does not relate to the topic, and the band descriptors set out how far: an answer that is tangential or tackles the prompt minimally sits around band 4 for Task Response, one barely related to the prompt around band 2, and content wholly unrelated to the task is band 1.

The rule

Both Academic and General Training format pages say: 'You should remember that you will be penalised if what you write does not relate to the topic.' For Academic Task 2, ielts.org gives an example: if the topic is one aspect of computers, focus on that aspect and do not write about computers in general.

How relevance appears in the descriptors

From the Task 2 band descriptors. Task 1 has matching lines under Task Achievement.

BandTask Response wording
6Main ideas are relevant, but some supporting arguments and evidence may be less relevant or inadequate
5Some main ideas are put forward, but they are limited and not sufficiently developed and/or there may be irrelevant detail
4The prompt is tackled in a minimal way, or the answer is tangential, possibly due to some misunderstanding of the prompt
3No part of the prompt is adequately addressed, or the prompt has been misunderstood
2The content is barely related to the prompt (Coherence and Cohesion: the entire response may be off-topic)
1The content is wholly unrelated to the prompt

Off topic is not the same as an unpopular opinion

Relevance is about answering the question asked, not about which side you take. IDP says there are no right or wrong opinions in Writing and Speaking (IDP). If the question asks you to discuss both views, IDP advises giving both equal weight; if it asks whether you agree, you do not have to give an opposing view.

Lexical Resource can also suffer: band 4 describes vocabulary that is 'unrelated to the task' (band descriptors).

Frequently asked questions

Is a partly off-topic essay band 1?+

No. Band 1 is for content wholly unrelated to the prompt. Partly relevant answers are placed lower on Task Response depending on how much of the prompt they address.

Can I write a prepared essay on a similar topic?+

It risks being tangential, and band 0 is used where there is proof an answer is totally memorised.

Does Task 1 have the same rule?+

Yes. ielts.org's penalty wording covers both tasks, and the Task 1 descriptors have matching relevance lines.

Does off topic affect only Task Response?+

Mainly, but Coherence and Cohesion band 2 mentions an entirely off-topic response, and Lexical Resource band 4 mentions vocabulary unrelated to the task.
