Band 8 model answer

A couple of years ago, I took part in a hackathon hosted by a tech hub in Manchester. The team was formed to develop a functional prototype for an app designed to reduce food waste in local student accommodation. It was a motley crew of four: a graphic designer, two backend developers, and myself, who took on the role of project lead and primary researcher. My responsibility was to map out the user journey and ensure we remained focused on the core problem during the intense forty-eight-hour sprint. We spent the first few hours brainstorming, fuelled by far too much lukewarm coffee, before diving into the wireframing phase. The atmosphere was electric, with people typing frantically into the early hours of the morning. By the final afternoon, we had managed to build a working interface that allowed students to log leftover groceries and alert their flatmates via a notification system. To our surprise, we ended up winning the 'most practical solution' award, which was a massive morale boost for everyone involved. Being part of that team was a deeply rewarding experience. I felt a profound sense of camaraderie, as we all relied on each other’s unique strengths to overcome technical hurdles. There was something incredibly satisfying about transforming a messy, abstract idea into something tangible in such a short window of time. It taught me that when a group is truly aligned on a shared vision, the creative output is significantly greater than what any individual could achieve working in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe an experience as a member of a team"?

Jot down the team's objective and your specific contribution to ensure clarity.

How long should my answer be?

Speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

Can I use this model answer in the exam?

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
