Green spaces versus public transport: discuss both views

Proponents of green urban spaces argue that parks and gardens are vital for public health. Access to nature within a concrete environment provides residents with necessary recreational areas, which can lower stress levels and promote physical activity. For instance, cities like Singapore have integrated extensive park connectors that encourage cycling and walking, leading to a healthier populace. Such spaces also mitigate the 'urban heat island' effect, making cities more liveable during warmer months.

Conversely, those who prioritise public transport systems highlight the urgent need to address traffic congestion and air pollution. A comprehensive, reliable network of trains and buses reduces individual car dependency, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the expansion of the London Underground has allowed millions to commute efficiently without relying on private vehicles, significantly lowering the city's overall carbon footprint. By improving transit, governments can foster economic growth by enabling easier access to employment hubs.

In my view, while green spaces are undoubtedly valuable, the long-term benefits of an efficient public transport system are more substantial.
