How it's scored

You are scored on content (reading every word correctly), oral fluency (smooth, natural pace with no hesitation), and pronunciation. Fluency and pronunciation usually move your score more than a single missed word.

Strategy & template

  1. 1Use the prep time to read the text silently and mark natural pause points at commas and full stops.
  2. 2Start speaking the moment the microphone opens — long silences are penalised.
  3. 3Keep a steady, even pace; do not rush or trail off at the end.
  4. 4If you stumble on a word, keep going rather than stopping to correct it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pausing too long before the first word and losing content marks.
  • Reading too fast and slurring word endings, which hurts pronunciation.
  • Stopping to self-correct, which breaks fluency scoring.

Frequently asked questions

How important is fluency in PTE Read Aloud?

Very. A smooth, even delivery at a natural pace scores higher than a hesitant reading that gets every word right. Keep going even if you misread a word.

Should I stop if I make a mistake in Read Aloud?

No. Stopping or repeating a word breaks your fluency score. Continue at a steady pace to the end.
