Canada SDS Is Closed: What Indian Students Apply Through Now
The Student Direct Stream closed at 2:00 p.m. ET on 8 November 2024. Every Indian student applying for a Canadian study permit since then goes through the regular stream, and the difference is not small: SDS targeted roughly 20 business days, while the regular stream typically runs 8 to 12 weeks from biometrics.
Nearly two years on, a lot of guidance still circulating online describes the SDS checklist as though it applies. It doesn't, and one of the things it got rid of matters directly if you're booking an English test right now.
What SDS Was and Why It Mattered
Launched in 2018, SDS fast-tracked study permit applications from 14 countries including India, Brazil, China, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam. In exchange for a fixed upfront checklist, applicants got expedited processing and, in practice, stronger approval odds.
What ended was the speed and the fixed checklist. What didn't end is study permits themselves. Canada is still issuing them, with a 2026 national target of 408,000, of which about 155,000 are reserved for new students. The fast lane closed, not the road.
The English Test Change Nobody Mentions
SDS carried a fixed language benchmark that applicants had to clear regardless of what their institution asked for. That single number, widely quoted as IELTS 6.0 in each band, is the figure Indian students still repeat to each other.
It was an SDS rule. With SDS gone, there is no separate fixed visa-side language score for the regular study permit stream. Your target now comes from your institution's admission requirement, not from a checklist.
In practice this cuts both ways. If your programme asks for 6.5 overall, that's your number, and the old 6.0-per-band figure is irrelevant. If your programme asks for less, you're no longer forced up to an artificial floor. Either way, read your offer letter rather than a forum post. What Replaced the Checklist
Three requirements now carry most of the weight.
Provincial Attestation Letter. Most applicants need a PAL or TAL confirming a place within their province's allocation under the international student cap. Quebec uses a CAQ instead. From January 2026, master's and PhD applicants at public universities are exempt from PAL.
Proof of funds. The living-expense requirement rose for applications submitted on or after 1 September 2025 and now sits at roughly CAD 22,895 per year, separate from and on top of your first-year tuition. This is the figure applicants most often underestimate.
Genuine Student requirement. The GS assessment replaced the older genuine temporary resident test, adding scrutiny to whether your study plan holds together as a coherent academic and career decision.
A weak study plan is now a refusal reason in its own right, where SDS speed once carried borderline files through.
Watch the Date on Anything You Read
Guidance on this topic is unusually unreliable, and the giveaway is the date. At least one widely-shared 2026 guide states SDS was discontinued in November 2023. It was November 2024, confirmed consistently across immigration firms and IRCC coverage.
If a page gets the closure date wrong, treat its proof-of-funds figures and processing estimates as equally stale. Both changed after that date.
What This Means for Your Timeline
Plan backwards from your intake, not forwards from today. Allow 8 to 12 weeks for the permit after biometrics, add the time to secure your PAL after accepting your offer and paying tuition, and put your English test before all of it, since your offer depends on the score.
That sequencing is the practical consequence of losing SDS. Under a 20-day target you could compress a late decision. At 8 to 12 weeks you cannot, and a retake sitting inside that window pushes your intake by a semester. If a competitive score is your goal, book the test early enough that a second attempt still fits.
Is Canada Still Worth It
Indian student arrivals fell sharply through early 2026, and the drop is real. But the students affected are largely those whose profiles were borderline and were previously carried by SDS speed and relative leniency. Applicants with strong academics, genuine funding and a coherent study plan continue to be approved at high rates.
If your profile is strong, the change is mostly a timeline problem. If it was marginal, the honest read is that the system no longer overlooks that, and the choice is to strengthen the profile or look at other destinations. The UK and Australia both remain open with different requirements, and the test you need differs by destination.
