AFTRS English requirement
From AFTRS's international students page and the Master of Arts Screen: Business course page, read 31 Oct 2026.
| Course | IELTS Academic | International fee |
|---|---|---|
| Master of Arts Screen: Business (1 year) | 7.0 overall, or equivalent in an approved test | A$64,944 |
Other tests, exemptions and One Skill Retake
AFTRS accepts an equivalent result from another approved testing provider, or evidence that you meet one of the exemption categories set by the Department of Home Affairs. It does not print PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo scores, and states only an overall IELTS figure with no band minimums.
If your IELTS result is below 7.0, AFTRS says you may be able to sit the IELTS One Skill Retest. For the student visa, the test must be taken within two years of lodging your visa application, and the Department of Home Affairs does not accept online or at-home test results.

Deadlines, age and how to apply
International applications for the 2027 Master of Arts Screen: Business closed on 13 October 2026, three weeks before the domestic deadline, so plan your test well before the next round opens. AFTRS accepts international applicants only if they are 18 or over before the closing date.
Applications are made online with a CV and a business project proposal. Once you accept an offer, pay fees and arrange Overseas Student Health Cover, AFTRS issues the Confirmation of Enrolment you need for the student visa.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your AFTRS course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
