University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Akita International University (AIU)?

Akita International University in Japan, where all classes are taught in English, asks undergraduate applicants on its International Examination for English equal to Eiken Pre-1. Its 2027 guide sets this at IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 61 (3.5 on the new scale) or Cambridge B2 First 170. Three consecutive years of English-medium schooling can replace a test.Source: Akita International University official English requirements · checked 30 October 2026

English-medium schooling instead of a test

You can submit documents instead of a score if you had at least three consecutive years of instruction in English, including the final year of secondary school, and graduated or expect to graduate. PTE and Duolingo are not on the list.

Photocopies are acceptable for IELTS, TOEFL iBT and Eiken; other tests need the original score report.

How to check

The guide has notes on IELTS Indicator and IELTS Online that we could not read clearly, so if you plan to use either, confirm with AIU admissions first. We did not find a graduate English minimum on the pages we read.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your AIU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Akita International University (AIU) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
