Tests TUJ does not accept, and waivers
For undergraduates, TUJ does not accept IELTS Indicator, IELTS One Skill Retake, TOEFL iBT Home Edition or TOEFL MyBest scores. The test must be taken no earlier than two years before you apply. TOEFL ITP 550 counts only if TUJ ran the test.
A test may be waived if you have 15 or more college credits from a US-accredited institution including English Composition at C or above, three or more years in a curriculum taught only in English, or an SAT or ACT score, though TUJ says a score may still be required. The LLM waives the test for a degree from an English-speaking institution.

Bridge Program and Academic English Program
The Bridge Program in Tokyo and Kyoto is a one-year conditional route in three levels: Bridge 1 from IELTS 5.0 and Bridges 2 and 3 from 5.5. A new qualifying score can let you start your degree early. Applicants below Bridge level can study in the Academic English Program.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your TUJ programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
