AIB English test scores
From AIB's English language proficiency page, which says all applicants must meet one of its categories.
| Test | AIB minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 79; writing and reading 20, listening and speaking 18 |
| PTE Academic | 58, no band below 50 |
| Cambridge English (CAE, CPE from 2015) | 176, no band below 169 |
| GCE A Level | C or better in English |
Qualifying without a test
Category 2 covers secondary education equivalent to the Australian Senior Certificate, taught and assessed in English in Canada (except Quebec), Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, South Africa or the USA. Category 3 covers tertiary study at AQF Level 5 or above taught in English in a longer list of countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, the Philippines and Singapore, checked against AEI or NARIC UK country profiles.
If you cannot meet Categories 1 to 3, a waiver may apply after at least five years living and working in a listed English-speaking country, with a passport or visa copy and a manager's reference on letterhead confirming English was used at work. Duolingo is not listed.

Validity and how to check
Test results are valid for two years up to the date you start at AIB. The page does not mention student visas or say which programs it applies to beyond all applicants.
Requirements vary by course and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your AIB course page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test. Your student visa is assessed separately, under the Department of Home Affairs Student visa (subclass 500) rules.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the Australian Institute of Business (AIB) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
