How long is an IELTS score valid?
An IELTS result is recommended as evidence of your English for two years from the test date. UK Visas and Immigration and IRCC Canada apply that two-year limit strictly. Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts most skilled-visa scores achieved in the three years before you apply. The date on the Test Report Form is what counts.

Does IELTS expire after 2 years?
Strictly, no. The IELTS partners recommend that a result demonstrates ability for a maximum of two years, because language skills fade without use. Most universities and governments adopt that recommendation as policy, so in practice a result older than two years is rarely accepted. See the IELTS guidance for organisations.
An IELTS research review published in February 2023 confirmed the two-year limit is guidance that score users have overwhelmingly adopted, with only a few exceptions. Some institutions will consider an older result if you can prove you have kept using English since, but do not plan around that.
Validity by country: UK, Canada and Australia
United Kingdom: for a Secure English Language Test, results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded, per gov.uk.
Canada: for Express Entry your result must be less than two years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit the permanent-residence application. Only IELTS General Training is accepted for Express Entry, per IRCC.
Australia: for Competent, Proficient and Superior English the score must be achieved in the three years before the visa application, depending on the subclass. Functional English uses a 12-month window. See Home Affairs.
How to check your IELTS result online
Results are released through the test taker portal using your passport or ID number and candidate number. IELTS on computer results arrive in one to five days; IELTS on paper takes up to 13 days. The British Council emails a link; IDP gives you account access. Details are on the IELTS results page.
How many Test Report Forms do you get?
You receive one Test Report Form per test, on paper or as an eTRF. You can have it sent to up to five organisations free of charge by post, and to as many as you like electronically. Additional copies are available through your centre for up to two years after the test date. Since January 2023 IRCC no longer needs a hard copy, per IDP Canada.
Does One Skill Retake reset the two-year clock?
No. A One Skill Retake produces a new TRF number, but the date printed at the top is the date of the original four-skill test, and organisations are told to use that date for validity. Retaking one skill improves the score, not the expiry. See the IELTS One Skill Retake verification page.
