How BU handles TOEFL scores

The TOEFL code for all of Boston University is 3087; Engineering asks for no department code. Undergraduate admissions accepts the TOEFL iBT in person or as the Home Edition, but not TOEFL Essentials or TOEFL ITP Plus. Arts and Sciences does not accept MyBest scores, and Engineering will not combine scores from several tests to reach 90.

Engineering prefers the TOEFL and accepts IELTS when the TOEFL is unavailable. It reviews only the overall score; section scores it lists (such as Reading 21 and Listening 18) are guidelines, not requirements. Arts and Sciences and Metropolitan College treat TOEFL scores as valid for two years.

For comparison, Engineering sets IELTS at 7.0, and the undergraduate page says IELTS 7 satisfies the requirement for all programmes.

If your TOEFL score is below BU's level

Engineering will still review a complete application with a score below its minimum, but strongly recommends retaking the test; if you are admitted below the minimum, you have until your reply deadline to send a qualifying score. Undergraduates can request a waiver by the application deadline using BU's waiver form, at the Board of Admissions' discretion, and BU recommends an optional InitialView or Vericant interview alongside the test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your BU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
