What Duolingo score do you need for Caltech?

Caltech asks first-year international applicants for a Duolingo English Test score of at least 130 overall and 130 in each area, the same bar it sets as IELTS 7 overall and in each band. The test must be taken before the application deadline. For graduate study, an English test is not required for admission, though Caltech recognises Duolingo and gives no minimum.

Who must test, and the IELTS comparison

English proficiency scores are required of all first-year international applicants unless English is their native language or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school. Caltech strongly recommends a score even for non-native speakers taught in English. The exam must be taken before the application deadline.

An InitialView conversation is recommended for international students but does not replace the English test. Fee waivers for InitialView are available.

On the same page, the IELTS minimum is 7 overall and 7 in each area, set beside the DET 130 overall and 130 per area.

Graduate applicants and next steps

The graduate FAQ says an English test is not required for admission but that it is important to show strong English. Caltech recognises certified tests such as Duolingo; applicants may self-report or have results sent directly. Applicants who studied in the US for two or more years, or hold a degree taught in English, are exempt. Neither page describes conditional admission.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Caltech programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
