For Stage 1 diplomas, TOEFL iBT is 51 (W9 R8 L8 S14) from June 2026, or 3.5 on the 2026 band scale. Nursing and the 6.0 Stage 2 streams need TOEFL iBT 67, and the 6.5 health streams need 81. The page also lists Pearson Versant, Linguaskill, LanguageCert Academic and school English results such as GCE O Level or AS Level at grade C and GCE A Level at grade E.
Curtin English Gateway is accepted for most streams: a B grade with no skill below C for Stage 1 diplomas, and higher grades for Stage 2. Duolingo is not listed.

Student visa note and how to check
Curtin College says students who need a student visa may have to sit a test approved by the Department of Home Affairs. The page does not list Duolingo, a Foundation program or waiver rules.
Requirements vary by course and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your Curtin College course page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test. Your student visa is assessed separately, under the Department of Home Affairs Student visa (subclass 500) rules.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Curtin College publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
