Conclusion versus overview
IDP India: 'In Academic task 1, a conclusion is not necessary, but for task 2, it's crucial' (IDP India). The Task 1 band descriptors never mention a conclusion, but they do mention an overview.
| Task 1 band | Overview wording (Academic) |
|---|---|
| 7 | It presents a clear overview, the data are appropriately categorised, and main trends or differences are identified |
| 6 | A relevant overview is attempted |
| 5 | There may be a tendency to focus on details (without referring to the bigger picture) |
Where the overview goes
IDP's Writing FAQ: 'the examiner just needs to see an overview. It does not matter where you place it, although it is more likely to see one at the end of the answer' (IDP). IDP Vietnam's Academic Writing guide suggests organising the report into an introduction, an overview and the main features supported by figures.

What Task 1 does not need
The key assessment criteria describe Academic Task 1 as information transfer about the visual, 'not to speculative explanations that lie outside the given data' (key assessment criteria). So a closing paragraph giving your opinion or reasons for the trends is not required, and IDP India advises against including opinion.
The General Training letter is a different format. It needs a clear purpose, all three bullet points and a consistent tone, and you do not need to write addresses, per ielts.org.
Frequently asked questions
Is a summary paragraph at the end the same as an overview?+
It can be, if it states the main trends or differences. IDP says the position of the overview does not matter.
Can I get band 7 without an overview?+
In descriptor terms, no. Band 7 Task Achievement names a clear overview for Academic Task 1.
Does Task 2 need a conclusion?+
IDP India calls it crucial in Task 2, and the official key assessment criteria assess how clearly you formulate conclusions.
Should the overview include numbers?+
The descriptors ask the overview to identify main trends or differences; figures belong in the detail that supports key features.
