How the citizenship test covers English
The citizenship test page says passing the test shows you have "a basic knowledge of the English language", an understanding of what it means to become a citizen, adequate knowledge of Australia and a commitment to Australian values. There is no separate language test and no extra cost: the application fee includes the test.
| Test rule | Home Affairs figure |
|---|---|
| Questions | 20 multiple choice |
| Pass mark | At least 15/20 (75%) |
| Australian values questions | 5/5 (100%) correct |
| Time | 45 minutes |
| Who sits it | Generally aged 18 to 59 on the day the application is received |
Who does not sit the test
Home Affairs says you generally do not sit it if you are 17 or younger or 60 or over when you apply, have a permanent or enduring physical or mental incapacity, have a permanent loss or substantial impairment of hearing, speech or sight, or are in some specific groups, such as people born in Australia who are stateless. These applicants may have an interview instead.
Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the Home Affairs citizenship test page before you book a test or apply. This guide restates the official page; it is not legal or immigration advice.
