Rules, comparisons and data

Why was my Duolingo English Test not certified, and can I appeal?

Duolingo does not certify a result when it finds a rule violation, possible misconduct or evident misconduct, or when a technical issue stops the test. You can appeal some invalid results within 72 hours of the notice, once, and a specialist replies within 4 business days. A rule violation cannot be appealed, and technical failures mean taking the test again.

The three kinds of broken rule

For any broken rule Duolingo may refuse to certify your results, invalidate earlier results, suspend or block your account, with no refund (help centre). It sorts broken rules into three categories:

CategoryWhat it meansRetakeAppeal
Rule ViolationEvidence the test environment may not have been secureOnly if attempts remain on your creditNo
Possible MisconductStrong evidence of help from a person or outside resourceCredit expiresYes
Evident MisconductConfirmed help from a person or outside resourcePermanently blocked on any accountYes

How the appeal works

Log in, open My Tests, and use the Appeal This Result button next to the invalid result. The button is there for 72 hours after you are told the test was not certified, and you can appeal an invalid result only once. An appeals specialist reviews the session and emails a decision within 4 business days, and the decision is final (help centre). Duolingo's page for institutions gives the same 72-hour window and 4-business-day review (help centre).

If the result could not be certified because of a technical issue, you cannot appeal and need to take the test again (help centre). Where a technical issue stopped the test being completed and uploaded, Duolingo says that in most cases you can take it again without paying (help centre).

Results time and repeat problems

Certified results normally arrive within two days of the test, with an email when they are ready; once a test is in review, Duolingo cannot speed it up (help centre). Faster results cut the wait to 12 hours but do not guarantee a certified result (help centre).

A pattern of Rule Violations or Possible Misconduct across tests within 365 days can lead to a one-year suspension, counted from the earliest broken rule. Certified results you have already shared stay valid, but you cannot share them with new institutions while suspended (help centre). Read the home testing rules before your next attempt.

Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page for your country before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from the test owner.
